Kiwi Mark Brown cards second 59 during tournament at Tauranga Golf Club

Kiwi golfer Mark Brown has scored a rare 59 during the second round of the Carrus Men's Open at Tauranga Golf Club.

The 43-year-old hit nine birdies and an eagle in his 11-under round on Friday to take the clubhouse lead - the second time he has achieved that score in his career.

Brown, who has three professional wins under his belt and finished tied for 24th at the 2008 PGA Championship, joins American Jim Furyk as the only two golfers in the world to score two 59 rounds in tournament golf.

The first time he scored 59 was also at the Tauranga Golf Club and also during the second round of a tournament.

The man from Lower Hutt had a chance to score a 58, but missed the birdie putt on the final hole.

The world record for a tournament round is 55, carded by Aussie Rhein Gibson at River Oaks Golf Club in Edmond, Oklahoma, six years ago.

But any score under 60 is regarded as an achievement on par with a bowling hat-trick in cricket or perhaps a triple century with the bat.

Speaking to Newshub after the incredible achievement, Brown said the thought of shooting a 59 wasn't on his mind until late in the round.

"Starting out today, I was just trying to get back into the tournament," he told Newshub. "As the round went on, it came into my mind again and it was nice to get it done.

"With five holes to go, I started thinking about it and I was trying to get lower than 59 this time, but I didn't play well in the last two or three holes."
