New Zealand's All Star Cheerleaders preparing for World Champs

New Zealand's All Star Cheerleaders are heading to Orlando, Florida to compete in the ICU World Cheerleading Championships.

Final preparations are underway to perfect every full around tick-tock, hitch-kick double-basket and ball-up stretch.

Fifteen-year-old Anna Griggson loves cheerleading. She moved from Tauranga to Auckland to be a part of the team.

"It's been a dream as long as I can remember to go to [the] Worlds, we have all just bonded so well, they are all my family," she says.

The family is a large one of 66, but her little sister is her biggest fan. Anna's little sister Brooklyn is also a cheerleader and hopes to follow in her big sister's footsteps.

Anna's so good; she's been selected for three different teams.

The training is hard work and a full time commitment. The athletes have been doing twelve-hour days leading up to the World Champs.

Kimberley Ramsay is their head coach and has been running All Star Cheerleaders for 15 years.

She says a lot has changed in that time.

"The sport has definitely gotten a lot more difficult, and the technique and stuff we use, but it's more about the mind now and the psychology of the sport and getting the kids, athletes ready for actual competition," she told Newshub.

The team's spent four months learning and perfecting their routines, and they're hoping to bring home gold.

Cheerleading is now recognised as a provisional Olympic sport, there's a chance their next competition could be in Tokyo 2020.
