Warriors mourning loss of oldest fan Edna Burnett

In the build-up to their NRL top-of-the-table clash with St George-Illawarra Dragons, the NZ Warriors have lost their oldest supporter - 96-year-old Edna Burnett.

Before Friday night's fixture, the club will pay a big-screen tribute to Ms Burnett, who was one of its most recognisable personalities since signing up as a member in 2001.

Warriors players will wear black armbands in her honour during the match.

Ms Burnett had attended games since the Warriors first began in 1995 and, along with daughter Cynthia and son Dennis, she became a regular at member events.

Ms Burnett was particularly well known for dispensing hugs to players and staff, and she received flowers and was serenaded by the team on her 95th birthday.

In 2013, she joined the team on a charter flight to Dunedin for the Warriors pre-season trial against Brisbane.

On arrival, she told the Otago Daily Times: "I don't know if I am the Warriors' biggest fan, but I am the oldest."

News of her passing has been met with condolences from around the NRL.

"Terribly saddened to hear the passing of this amazing angel Edna," posted former Warriors captain Steve Price. "Such a ray of sunshine every time I saw her.

"Sending my thoughts and prayers to the family and friends during this very sad time. Loved getting a hug. RIP Edna."

Said Warriors ambassador Sir Peter Leitch: "She was a lovely lady and a beautiful person, and she loved giving you a hug.

"She'll be sorely missed."
