Kiwi pole vaulting star Eliza McCartney has soared to a new personal best at a Diamond League event in Oregon.

The 21-year-old cleared 4.85m in finishing second at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene on Sunday morning (NZ time), beating her previous record of 4.82m which she set last year in Auckland.

The record is also a New Zealand best.

The Olympic bronze medallist lost out to Jennifer Suhr, the American also clearing 4.85m but finishing ahead of the Kiwi due to countback from previous vaults.

Meanwhile, shot putter Tom Walsh finished fourth in his event.

The Kiwi could only manage 21.84m and lost out to rival Ryan Crouser who threw 22.53m.

Poland's Michał‚ Haratyk (21.97m) and Brazilian Darlan Roman (21.95m) finished second and third respectively.
