Kiwi cyclist George Bennett has held onto sixth place after a wet stage 12 on the Giro d'Italia on Friday morning (NZ time).

Bennett crossed the finish line in the peloton, but could only manage 28th place on the 214km stage between Osimo and Imola.

Despite that, Bennett did well to keep pace with the leading group as heavy rain fell with just over an hour of racing to go, which caused splits in the peloton as the roads filled with standing water and spray kicked up from the wheels.

The Nelson rider remains 2m 9s behind pink jersey holder Simon Yates in the general classification.

The stage was won by Irishman Sam Bennett in 4h, 49m 34s, just edging out George's LottoNL-Jumbo teammate Danny van Poppe.

Stage 13 begins on Saturday (NZ time) in Ferrara and runs 80km to Nervesa Della Battaglia.
