The Kiwi became the first female in 11 years to win the event.

Jonelle Price notched the biggest win of her career when she rode Classic Moet to victory on a nerve-wracking final day at the Badminton Horse Trials on Monday morning (NZ time).

She became the first female winner of the event since Australian Lucinda Fredericks in 2007 in the final showjumping phase with a final score of 28.0.

She is also the first New Zealand woman to win the event.

Price began the final day at the top of the standings after collecting just 0.4-time penalties in Sunday's cross country which saw her catapult from 22nd to first place.

She edged out Brit Oliver Townend who was chasing not only Badminton victory, but also Rolex Grand Slam honours. However, he finished second and fifth on his two horses.

"I certainly had lady luck on my side today," said Price, "but sometimes you need a little luck".

"Dreams do come true."

Price won £100,000 ($NZ192,880) for her victory in Gloucestershire.

Four-time champion Sir Mark Todd and Kiltubrid Rhapsody finished in sixth, with his other horse Leonidas coming in at 14th.

Fellow Kiwi Tim Price and Ringwood Sky Boy came 12th, while defending champ Andrew Nicholson and Nereo withdrew before the final phase.
