The exclusion of All Whites vice-captain Chris Wood from England's FIFA World Cup squad has fired up some confused English football fans on social media.

On Thursday morning (NZ time), Gareth Southgate revealed his 23-man squad for the World Cup in Russia which included a mixture of youth and experience, but the omission of Wood didn't please many fans, who thought he was eligible to play for England.

But little did they know, Wood has represented New Zealand on 56 occasions, scoring 24 goals in the process.

Fans believed the 26-year-old striker deserved an opportunity after an outstanding debut Premier League season with Burnley.

Wood finished the season as the leading goal scorer with 10 goals in 20 starts for the Clarets, leading them to a seventh-place finish a spot at next year's Europa League.

Sadly for England fans, Wood won't be on deck to try and help the 'Three Lions' win their first world cup since 1966.
