Rugby: Sevens stars missing from first-ever women's 15s contracts

One very familiar name stood out at the announcement of the first-ever women's 15s contracts.

World Cup-winning captain Fiao'o Fa'amausili has ended her shortlived retirement to combine semi-pro rugby with police work.

"Yes, I'm back," she confirmed. "I still love the game."

But while 17 World Cup winners feature in the new contract list, there are some very notable ommissions.

World Player of the Year Portia Woodman, Sarah Goss, Kelly Brazier and Stacey Waaka will remain on more lucrative full-time sevens deals.

However they can still play 15s for the Black Ferns and will collect weekly payments for any involvement.

"We'll be having discussions in coming weeks around who of those players would be available at certain times of the year, which take into account workloads and injuries," says Black Ferns head coach Glenn Moore.

There's no clash between the sevens and the two tests against Australia in August, but commitments could overlap in November, when the Black Ferns play USA in Chicago.

Then two more tests in Europe fall as the sevens team prepare for Dubai at the end of the month.

The importance of each game and tournament will be weighed up.

"We talk about winning pinnacle events," says Moore. "That's World Cups, world series sevens tournaments and Olympic Games."

The hard part for many rising players right now is figuring out which version of women's rugby is more prestigious.

"Some people can answer that, but I still can't find an answer really," says Canterbury fullback Grace Brooker.

For now players can dip in and out, but eventually - like the men - a choice between 15s and sevens will probably need to be made.
