A Colorado bakery was pleasantly surprised when a bear broke in and devoured a massive total of 38 fruit pies before cheekily taking two for the road.

The bear downed 24 cherry and 14 apple pies, but left the strawberry-and-rhubarb pies untouched on Tuesday night at the Colorado Cherry Company.

The bear found a gap in the surveillance camera system and snuck in, before leaving through the back window.

Kristi Lehnert, owner of the bakery, told Sky News the bear broke in through a window five feet from the ground.

The bear left some major clues, breaking the window and creating mess on the shop floor.

However Ms Lehnert said the mess remained minimal and the bear stayed in the little corner where the pies were on the counter cooling, according to Sky News.

Neighbours have reportedly seen a black bear lingering around the bakery but cannot confirm it was the same one to cause damage.

Ms Lehnert was visited by another snooping bear at her other bakery in Colorado, where it damaged the main doors and freezer doors amid the hunt for some treats.

She has installed an electric fence because of bear's tendency to search through bakery's rubbish for food.
