A US dentist insists he hasn't been contacted by US or Zimbabwean authorities after he paid NZ$70,000 to kill a famous lion.

Walter Palmer has caused international outrage after shooting Cecil the lion, but says he thought it was a legal hunt.

Two men, who it's alleged planned the hunt, have appeared in court charged with poaching.

People in Dr Palmer's hometown of Minnesota say he's not welcome back.

"It's criminal that someone would find it enjoyable to shoot such a beautiful creature, just so they can say they have a trophy," one resident said.

"It upsets me that people can be so stupid to take a life like that, whether it's human or not," said another.

It's alleged Cecil was lured outside of Hwange National Park using bait so he could be shot.
