A small Queensland community is rallying behind a woman whose husband and two children were killed in a gas explosion.

Police are investigating whether the blast in Mt Isa was a murder-suicide after the couple's marriage broke down.

The forensic team had the grim task of removing the bodies of two children and their father from their Mt Isa property this morning.

Four-year-old River Hinder, his big sister Nyobi and father Charlie died after an explosion tore through their caravan.

The blast was so large it shook the town, and residents assumed it came from the local mine.

Fifty-five homes were evacuated after police feared there could be another.
