Death Cab for Cutie have issued an apology after hackers infiltrated the band's Facebook account and flooded the page with explicit content.

The group's page on the social networking website was taken over by Internet pranksters this week and they began posting pictures and links about sex tips, as well as X-rated videos.

The images were removed, but not before fans captured screenshots and uploaded the images online. The incident quickly spawned the hashtag #deathcabforbooty on social media.

The rockers have said sorry to fans, writing in a message, "DCfC's Facebook was hacked this evening and explicit content was posted to the page. The account is now secure and fans will not be subjected to these kind of posts in the future. Our sincere apologies."
