An under-fire US hunter who posted photos of herself with a dead giraffe says just because she killed it, doesn't mean she didn't respect it.
Sabrina Corgatelli's photos were taken in South Africa and have been shared on Facebook thousands of times by many opposed to her actions.
"You shot a harmless, beautiful animal? For what reason? So you could take a photo and pretend you have feelings. Stone cold b***h," says one commenter.
"Why would you kill a giraffe?" questioned another.
Ms Corgatelli defended herself, saying everything she did was legal and was not about killing the animal, but rather the hunt itself.
"When you hunt an animal, everybody just thinks we're cold-hearted killers, and it's not that; there is a connection with the animal," she told US TV show Today.
"Just because we hunt them doesn't mean we don't have a respect for them."
Ms Corgatelli understands she made the kill about the same time as the controversial death of Zimbabwe's much-loved lion, Cecil.
US dentist Walter Palmer allegedly paid US$50,000 to hunt the lion using a bow and arrow.
