Legendary horse trainer Bart Cummings was laid to rest in Sydney today, with thousands turning out to farewell the Aussie icon who won 12 Melbourne Cups.

Cummings' larger-than-life personality was remembered at the fittingly massive St Mary's Cathedral.

In a full Catholic ceremony, the tributes flowed for a man regarded as a giant of racing who never held back what he thought.

"They got what they asked for – his view, unequivocal, unabashed, uncensored," says son Anthony Cummings. "Common sense, he said, was something that wasn't very common."

When it came to racing royalty, Cummings was king.

He ruled the sport over six decades, and the Melbourne Cup was the jewel in the crown, putting him up there with the best Australian sportsmen of all time.
