A British Airways flight had to be evacuated on the runway in Las Vegas after a large fire started in the left engine.

The 159 passengers and 13 crew were forced to escape via the emergency slides on Tuesday (local time), the Associated Press reports.

A large plume of black smoke was seen coming from the Boeing 777-200, which was bound for Gatwick Airport, near London.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the fire was put out quickly using fire retardant.

McCarran International Airport tweeted two people received minor injuries.

At one stage, one of the airport runways was out of service, but flights were continuing on the other three. It urged people to check their flights for possible delays.

The Clark County Fire Department said the fire wasn't the result of a crash.
