A pair of kayakers are lucky to be alive after a breaching humpback whale practically landed on top of them off the coast of California.
The kayakers were paddling through a pod of feeding whales – which can weigh between 23,000 and 36,000 kilograms – when the whale sprung out of the water, landing close to the kayakers.
So close, it looked like the kayakers had been crushed, according to people watching from a nearby boat.
The man and woman were thrown overboard during the commotion but were able to paddle back to shore with some help from other kayakers.
