What are quantum computers?

Quantum computers – the words probably sent shivers down your spine if you've never been much of a physics fan.

Giant computing conglomerate Intel has just announced they'll invest $50 million over the next 10 years into researching them.

Obviously, they must be good - or so you'd think.

In a nutshell, they're very complicated and very good at solving complicated problems.

It turns out that it's not all that easy to simply explain what a quantum computer is; in fact it's actually quite hard for the average person to understand.

But Auckland University computer science lecturer Paul Ralph tried his best to explain.
