A woman reported to be a New Zealander has died while trying to help a young boy in Australia.
He was swept off rocks in New South Wales.
Police say the woman jumped into the water at Fingal Head to try save the nine-year-old.
"Very heroic for what she did," says surf lifesaver Jimmy Keogh. "Unfortunately the circumstances at the time were very treacherous in and around the rocks. There were large waves impacting the rocks with large backwash."
Two bystanders dragged the woman from the water.
She was transported to Tweed Hospital, where she later died.
