The Germans are being accused of both putting out New Zealand tyre manufacturers out of business and adding to our tyre waste.
Environment Minister Nick Smith wants to find ways of recycling five million used tyres a year.
Green MP Julie Anne Genter told the Paul Henry programme this morning there are other problems to consider.
"Not only do we have the tyres coming into New Zealand that we have to dispose of," she says. "We're actually now purchasing recycled tyres from Germany because they're so good at recycling their tyres."
