An inquest into the deaths of two Australians killed in a car crash while on a school trip is set to begin in Rotorua.

Gabriel Conor Runge, 16, and teacher Andre Vogel, 36, who was driving, died when the van carrying them, six other students and another teacher collided with a milk tanker near Reporoa in November last year.

The group from the Noosa Pengari Steiner School on Queensland's Sunshine Coast had been in New Zealand for a seven-day hiking trip.
