The Australian Prime Minister has honoured a bet with his New Zealand counterpart by wearing a black-and-white tie in parliament today.

Malcolm Turnbull lost the bet to John Key after the All Blacks beat the Wallabies at the Rugby World Cup but he wasn't about to wear a tie sporting the national colours without a back-hander.

"The Minister for Agriculture has checked it out, for a biosecurity point of view, and he assures me there are no apple stains on it at all," Mr Turnbull said.

"However, we have detected a bit of Lemon-and-Paeroa and Steinlager, which just goes to show that you've got to be careful when you're getting the beer out of the chilly-bin."

Mr Turnbull at least seemed gracious, while most other Australians have quickly moved on from rugby to cricket.
