Researchers granted $53M

New Zealand researchers have been awarded grants totalling $53 million for projects ranging from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions to therapies for motor neuron disease.

Science and Innovation Minister Steven Joyce says there were 92 successful research proposals in the latest Marsden Fund allocation round.

"The government recognises that funding for research can generate substantial returns to society over time," Mr Joyce said.

"Marsden Fund grants are awarded to some of our most experienced researchers."
