The alleged gunman at the centre of a seven-hour-long siege in Sydney's south-west has been arrested.

Heavily armed police surrounded an apartment block in the suburb of Ashcroft just before midnight last night, after neighbours reported seeing a man armed with a gun shouting on the street, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

The man, in his 40s, was taken to hospital under police guard. No one was injured in the arrest.

Police and paramedics remain in the street due to reports that there may be an explosive device in the unit block.
