A Kiwi man has reportedly appeared in an Australian court, charged with murder after a road rage incident on a Brisbane motorway yesterday.

Tamate Henry Heke is accused of punching 50-year-old Shane Merrigan, causing him to fall in front of a truck and be killed instantly, the Courier Mail reports.

Heke briefly appeared at the Brisbane Magistrates Court today "with his head bowed wearing prison-issued clothing", the newspaper says.

The 36-year-old's lawyer, Adam Magill, says his client hadn't really been in trouble with the law before.

"It's devastating for him and his family," he told the Courier Mail. "They're devastated, it's going to be a long road."

Heke will appear in court again in January next year.
