A flight made an emergency landing at Mogadishu airport yesterday after an on-board explosion occurred soon after the plane's take-off from the Somali capital.

Djibouti-bound Flight D3159, owned by Daallo Airlines, caught fire just five minutes after taking off, the Mirror.co.uk reports.

A loud bang was heard followed by flames that lit up one side of the plane, passengers said.

After the plane landed, images taken at the Aden Abdulle International Airport showed massive damage on the right side of the plane near the engine.

Airport officials said three people were injured in the incident.

The country's National Intelligence and Security Agency have launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion.

Daallo Airlines is a privately-owned East African operator that links the small nation to neighbouring countries.
