Two New York police officers have been taken to hospital after they were shot at the Melrose Houses, a public housing complex in the Bronx.

The shooting happened around 8pm Thursday night (local time) at 321 East 156th St, near Concourse Village when the officers were on duty in the Melrose neighbourhood.

Officers responded to the seventh floor where a shootout was underway.

An official said one of the officers was struck in the check and the second hit in the leg, the New York Times reports. They were taken to Lincoln Medical Centre.

The officer struck in the leg was in surgery.

According to the New York Times, one suspect was shot and wounded at the scene, and their condition is unclear.  A second suspect has been taken into custody and a third has not been caught.

More than 100 police officers were reported on the scene where the shooting occurred.

PIX11 reports many have entered the apartment building with sledge hammers, jackhammers and automatic weapons.

The officers are assigned to cover multiple housing complexes in the 40th and 42nd precincts in the Bronx.
