A New Zealander living in Brussels says the city has been chaos since the explosions.

32-year-old Sarah Spence, from Whangaparaoa, has been living in Brussels with her husband and two children for five years but never thought she would experience something like this.

"All day we have heard sirens. There are lots of police and ambulance support but all we have really seen is the emergency service going all day," said Sarah.

Mrs Spence lives 15 minutes from the airport where the first two explosions took place and minutes away from Maelbeek Metro Station -- the scene of the third blast

"The main metro stop where the explosions were is only three stops away from us so it’s just all a bit close to home really."

She says she is grateful she wasn’t using the train service at the time but it's the unknown that is terrifying.

"I thought it [the attacks] were over so now that this happens you sort of think of gosh is this going to continue forever," she said.
