Two Australian tourists have been shot in an apparent drug deal gone wrong in New Orleans.

The 21- and 23-year-old mining students from West Australia are in a stable condition in hospital after the early morning shooting in the residential Algiers district.

The two were students at Perth’s Curtin University. The school has confirmed they were in the United States as part of a team competing in the Intercollegiate Mining Games.

After the games the students travelled to the southern city on a private holiday.

Curtin said the students’ families had been contacted and were arranging travel to the US.
