Detention centre on Manus Island to close

Papua New Guinea has announced it will close the Manus Island Detention Centre after a court there ruled it was unconstitutional.

It's asked Australia to immediately make alternative arrangements for the 850 male inmates.

The Australian government insists they will stay offshore.

"No one on Manus Island is coming to Australia," says Australian Immigration Minister Scott Morrison. "Full stop. End of section."

Papua New Guinea's government is offering full settlement rights for any of the inmates found to be genuine refugees.
