India's National Museum of Natural History has been gutted by fire.

The blaze broke out in the early hours of the morning, starting on the top floor before spreading to the other parts of the building.

Six firefighters were seriously injured and taken to hospital.

The museum opened in 1978 and officials say the fire safety measures in it were no longer in use.

It's not known what artefacts were destroyed but the building contained silk paintings, Indian scripts and more than 60,000 volumes of books.

An investigation is being carried out into what caused the blaze, which took nearly five hours to extinguish.
