Large quake southeast of Tonga

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake has hit southeast of Tonga tonight, according to the US Geological Survey.

The organisation had initially measured the quake as 6.1, but the magnitude has since been downgraded.

The quake struck at 7:31pm, 287km south-southeast of Nuku'alofa -- the Pacific island nation's capital -- at a depth of 35km.
