A mountain lion seen roaming around Los Angeles has been tranquilised and will be returned to its habitat after it wandered onto a school campus.

The lion was spotted on the grounds of John F. Kennedy High School in Granada Hills, and the school went into lockdown, Reuters reports.

The lion was not known to wildlife officials and was not tagged, however it will receive an air tag before being released into the Santa Susana Mountains, according to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

No-one was injured.

Ironically, the school's mascot is a "Golden Cougar".
