Melbourne mother charged with murder

The mother of a 14-month-old child whose body was found in a creek in Melbourne Australia has been charged with murder.

Sanaya Sahib's mother, 22-year-old Sofina Nikat, said she was pushed to the ground and her daughter was kidnapped in the park while the two of them were out waking, prompting a police hunt for the stranger.

She described the man as African in appearance and said he snatched the child from her pram.

The widespread search was called off when the baby girl's body was found partially submerged in Darebin Creek by a family, 17 hours after she went missing, Australian media reports.

Police say Nikat has now made a full confession to the murder of her daughter. She made no application for bail and was remanded to appear before the Melbourne Magistrates Court.

Police told Australian media they were looking for no other suspects.
