A 5.5 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of the Greek island of Crete but there were no immediate reports of damage.

The Athens Geodynamic institute said the quake occurred some 31km southeast of Zakros at a depth of 10km.

Greece is often buffeted by earthquakes but most cause no serious damage.

"We shook a lot but it didn't last long -- a few seconds," a resident on the island told Reuters.
