A vegan cafe in the Georgian capital of Tblisi has been attacked by meat-wielding far-right extremists.

Kiwi Cafe, a counterculture-style gathering place, was screening English-language episodes of Rick and Morty when the confrontation began.

Witnesses said at least 15 men stormed into Kiwi Cafe, began hurling sausages and meat, and started a brawl.

"Continuing to act loudly and disturbingly, they pulled out some grilled meat, sausages, fish and started eating them and throwing them at us, and finally they started to smoke," Kiwi Cafe wrote on Facebook. The post called the attackers "neo-Nazis who support fascist ideas".

"As soon as they came into the cafe a terrible quarrel started," eyewitness Ana Gulisashvili wrote on Facebook.

"They were shouting at the staff and throwing things around. They made a huge mess and began attacking people who were there to eat and take part in a film screening that Kiwi was hosting. They beat one of my friends and gave him a big gash on his head. Soon as the police came the group left."

The cafe's neighbours joined in the brawl after it spilled outside. The cafe says the attackers "got away clean", while one "friend" got lashed in the face by an elderly man.

Local reports said it was still unclear whether the attack was a prank that got out of hand or a premeditated assault.
