A group of Australian tourists have been caught up in a head-on bus crash in Vanuatu, which also claimed the life of two locals.

The tourists, who were visiting Port Vila, were all part of a P&O cruise, ABC reports.

Twelve people have been left with significant injuries, 10 of whom are being airlifted to Brisbane Hospital and Noumea for treatment.

A spokesperson for P&O also confirmed two locals had been killed in the incident.

Airlifts took place through Monday night and will continue throughout Tuesday.

The passengers had arrived onboard the P&O cruiseliner Pacific Dawn, which set off from Brisbane. The company sent its condolences to all those affected in the crash and have told ABC the ship will stay in Port Vila until all the medical transfers have been completed.

The ship will more than likely leave around midday Tuesday.
