Thieving monkey in jewellery store raid

It's unlike any jewellery store heist you'll see in the movies -- a brazen burglary by a pilfering primate in India, using fruit as a distraction to steal from a cash register.

CCTV from inside the store captured the monkey using a guava to weasel his way inside the store, the Hindustan Times reports.

The store's owner says the monkey threw the guava inside the store.

"Then it entered the store in the pretext of taking back the fruit. We threw the fruit back but it entered the shop anyway," the unnamed store owner told local media.

But it turns out it was a ploy, with the monkey losing interest in his fruit and heading toward the ultimate goal -- the cash register.

"It first attacked a worker but he escaped. It sat for almost 20 minutes in the store and then it opened the drawer in the cash counter and took away Rs 10,000 cash (NZ$215)."

The cheeky monkey got away with the money, but it is not known where it went or what the cash was spent on. Potentially more guavas.
