6yo stops to comfort crying homeless man

An act of kindness from a six-year-old American girl, shared by her mother online, has brought praise and donations from people around the world.

Virginia woman Kenyatta Lewis was leaving a shop with her daughter Janiyah on July 10 when they saw a homeless man crying.

Janiyah told her mother, the man might be "hot and thirsty" and then approached him to ask him about his troubles.

"Hi sir, be happy - it's a nice day, it's not raining. Are you hot? Why don't you go home, the ground is dirty?" she said.

According to the post, when the girl asked the man why he didn't go home he replied that he was homeless, explaining that his trailer had burnt down and he had lost his wife.

Janiyah gave the man a few dollars out of her purse and told the man to go to McDonald's - a place she herself enjoys.

Ms Lewis said the compassion her daughter showed made her "stop and think" and even the homeless man expressed surprise at the empathy from the six-year-old.

Ms Lewis' Facebook post attracted over 185,000 shares and along with her daughter, she has started a GoFundMe campaign for those in need. It has already exceeded the goal of US$1000.
