Annual whipping top competition begins in China

Thousands have gathered in China for the beginning of the fifth annual whipping top competition.

It's an ancient sport where players use a whip to spin a top.

More than 2700 players from across the country are in Guizhou Province to show off their whipping skills.

Competitions vary from battles, where players collide tops in an attempt to knock each other over, to top throwing and obstacle courses.

"We are lucky to have the chance to be here," says competitor Senhai Lin.

"The way people in the mainland play whipping tops are different than ours, but they can be combined."

There's also a mammoth one-metre tall top that takes multiple players whipping in unison to make it spin.
