US astronaut Jeff Williams has captured a unique view of the forest fires currently raging in the US state of Colorado.

Williams was aboard the international space station when it was above Colorado, and took a couple of high-resolution photographs of the fires which have been shared widely on social medial.

More than a hundred homes have been evacuated from the fire's path, as it moved towards the small community of Coaldale.

Crews were working fire lines around the blaze that has burned over 30 square kilometres.

Fire managers say it was started on Friday by a lightning strike in the Sangre de Cristo Wilderness.

The fire was five kilometres southwest of Coaldale, an Arkansas River town southwest of Colorado Springs.
