The government is warning New Zealanders in the German city of Munich to stay vigilant after at least nine people died in a shooting attack at a shopping mall.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) has not updated its general advisory for Germany but is urging Kiwis in the area to be cautious and to avoid going near Munich's Olympia Shopping Centre.

They've also asked any New Zealanders in the area to contact family members to tell them they're safe.

An MFAT spokesman said the government was in contact with German authorities and was at noon (NZT) still trying to establish whether any Kiwis were caught up in the attack.

Currently 420 New Zealanders are registered as being in Germany.
