Tonga's Prime Minister Samuela Akilisi Pohiva will make his first official visit to New Zealand later this week.
Prime Minister John Key says Mr Pohiva will receive a formal welcome at Government House in Auckland.
He will also lay a wreath at the Auckland War Memorial Museum and visit Tongan workers in Nelson.
"New Zealand and Tonga have a strong relationship, built around our long history of cooperation and the significant Tongan population in New Zealand," Mr Key said.
"As one of our closest neighbours, working together to advance Tonga's development objectives with support from our aid programme is a key priority."
Mr Pohiva will arrive in New Zealand on Wednesday.
