Video: Chilean Navy saves entangled whale

The Chilean Navy has put their skills to use freeing a humpback whale entangled in ropes.

A video of the rescue shows two divers using a knife to cut the ropes which are part of a set of crab traps.

The navy says they received a call for help on July 15, but because of the fading daylight, couldn't launch a rescue attempt until the next day.

Nearby fishing vessels had spotted the whale trapped in fishing gear.

Naval salvage divers were sent to the scene 120km west of Puerto Williams, where they found the 25-metre long humpback still struggling.

Particular attention was paid to the best way to approach the whale. After the 40 minute rescue attempt, the whale quickly swam away.
