With the US seemingly more divided by the day, and those divisions taking stage in the election campaign, ITV wanted to hear what ordinary Americans feel about the state of their nation, why certain communities fell alienated and are angry, why people are looking outside established politics for answers to their problems, and why race has once again become a battleground.

ITV visited three different communities which reflect the new reality of 'the home of the brave and the land of the free', the divided states of America.

The first snapshot is from North Carolina in the city of Fayetteville where half the population is black.

In their own words, three residents of the city share their fears that America could be sliding back to the dark days of racial violence and division.
