A passenger bus has plunged into the Trishuli River in central Nepal, killing 21 people.

The vehicle rolled about 100 meters down the slope and crashed into the fast-flowing river, about 120 kilometres west of Kathmandu.

The bus was carrying 41 people, and 17 have now been rescued, leaving three others missing.

It had been traveling to the tourist town of Pokhara when it came off the road around 5am (local time).

Police and villagers have been helping the injured and pulling the dead from wreckage, which was mostly submerged in the river.
