Five people, including a pregnant woman, have been killed by a Mississippi man in Alabama after his girlfriend tried to leave him.

Derrick Dearman, 27, then kidnapped his estranged girlfriend and a three-month-old on Saturday (local time), before turning himself in.

He broke into the house where his girlfriend was staying in Citronelle, Alabama, after she tried to leave their "abusive relationship", the Mobile County sheriff said.

He faces six counts of murder, including the killing of the unborn child. Authorities described the scene as "horrific" and "gruesome".

Dearman attacked the people in house while they were sleeping, using guns and other weapons, police said.

He then abducted his ex-girlfriend the child and drove to his father's home in Mississippi.

His father then took him to the local police to turn himself in.

Capital punishment is legal in Alabama, and Dearman could face the death penalty.
