NZer in Melbourne accused of 'cowardly' hit-and-run

A New Zealand man has appeared in court in Melbourne accused of what's been described as a cowardly hit-and-run in a stolen car.

Police say 22-year-old Nicholas Davison fatally knocked a young woman down, then fled the scene on foot.

Davison appeared before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday, charged with culpable driving causing death.

He also faces charges of dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident, failing to render assistance, trespassing and theft.

Davison was allegedly behind the wheel of a car that struck and killed the 22-year-old NSW woman in West Melbourne at 2:15am on Saturday.

After the crash, the occupants fled and police were unable to find them despite a search.

It's alleged the car was stolen from Docklands not long before the incident.

Davison was not required to speak during a brief appearance and was remanded into custody until his next appearance.
