Brazilian women's rugby sevens player Isadora Cerullo has become the first athlete to get engaged at the Rio Olympics after her girlfriend proposed to her on the pitch.

Ms Cerullo, 25, was a member of the Brazil squad that just missed out on reaching the last rounds of the tournament.

Following the winners' ceremony, Deodoro Stadium worker Marjorie Enya walked out and asked Ms Cerullo, her partner of two years, to marry her.

The proposal was accepted, and the happy couple embraced in front of the crowd and cameras.

"As soon as I knew she was in the squad I thought I have to make this special," Ms Enya told the BBC.

"I know rugby people are amazing and they would embrace it."

"The Olympic Games can look like closure but, for me, it's starting a new life with someone," added Ms Enya. "I wanted to show people that love wins."
