Protests over the death of an Aboriginal teenager have turned violent in Western Australia.

The Kalgoorlie courthouse was placed in lockdown after hundreds of demonstrators threw rocks and bottles, smashing windows and glass doors.

The violence erupted as a 55-year-old man charged with manslaughter waited to appear in court.

A dozen officers were injured in the clashes - and several police cars damaged.
