A teenage arachnophobe leapt from her car then watched it roll into a Sydney river on Sunday after a spider jumped on top of her.

The 18-year-old had just pulled up to a boat ramp when a Huntsman spider pounced onto her lap from under the visor.

The terrified teen jumped out of the car but forgot to apply the handbrake properly, and could only watch in horror as her car rolled into the river.

"She was really upset and shaking and crying," a witness told local media.

There is some good news - her car was insured and she didn't get bitten by the spider.

Huntsman spiders can grow as wide as 30cm.
